Tortola Attractions -- Continue
Of course, there are the incredible beaches of Tortola as well as the magnificent charter sailing; however, there’s so much more to this diminutive island --albeit, the BVI’s largest. If you’re interested in taking in some of the illustrious history of Tortola, then you’ll simply have to take a trip to Skyworld. It’s a gorgeous view of the island that you won’t get anywhere else. Beyond the breathtaking imagery, it’s also free and open to the public. If you’re more interested in getting a guided history lesson, visit St. Michael’s Church. It’s a gorgeous structure with a rich history that defines the beauty of Tortola --the priest who ran the congregation was an infamous pirate who used his religious down time to spy on incoming ships.
Beyond the historical significance of many of its structures, there are edifices that provide a thrill for all the senses. There are a few forts on the island as well as an infamous rum distillery that still functions. If you want to get a taste of some of the incredible rum that comes out of the BVI, this distillery simply cannot be missed. You’ll also notice a couple museums on the island that give you an up close and personal view back into the rich culture that makes up Tortola’s community.
Of course, one can’t spend time in Tortola without experiencing some of the fiery nightlife. For those who love their drink as much as their food, you’ll have to take in some of the incredible restaurants that flank the beaches of Tortola. The food is fantastic, the drinks are explosive, and the music just makes you want to dance until you can’t dance anymore.
You’d also be remiss if you didn’t get in a bit of shopping from one of the many duty free shops sprinkled throughout Tortola. The stores are full of items that are as beautiful as they are culturally significant. You simply must keep a piece of this Caribbean paradise with you and share it with your friends --they’ll want to visit the island as much as you never wanted to leave in the first place. With its natural beauty --found in the number of gardens and parks-- to its spicy nightlife, you’ll find yourself completely in love with the island.
