Tortola Crime

No matter where you are in the world, a huge concern is the crime rate. You may be surprised to find that even in the Caribbean you’re not always as safe as you think. As most island spots are perfect for pickpockets, there is a plethora of opportunities for people to have their belongings taken from them without their knowledge. However, if you take the proper precautions you won’t fall prey to the scalpers that are, no doubt, all over the island you’ve decided to visit.

Tortola Crime -- Continue

The British Virgin Island of Tortola is a smaller island --though the BVI’s biggest. It doesn’t have an excessive crime rate; however, if you use a bit of practicality, you’ll realize that you’re never totally safe if you don’t think that there’s someone willing to take something from you. The most alarming factor about Tortola, however, is that the crime rate has risen. Over the years, it’s gotten a bit rougher than in previous years. If you’re smart, though, you won’t be left unawares.

The advice for anyone visiting any tourist port is to be smart about your surroundings. You’re never too cool to be robbed. Always keep your belongings either in your hotel or very close by you at all times. Never ever travel alone --especially females. Hate to say it, girls, but simply because you’re female you’re thought of as an easier target for those who are looking to get an easy hand full of cash or jewelry. Travel in groups of three or more and never separate from that group unless it’s absolutely necessary --and even in those situations, you should travel with at least one person.

These are all things that play on commons sense; however, some people tend to slip up and forget that not everyone is to be trusted. If anyone approaches you that you don’t know, the best thing to do is simply walk away. Remember, the bad guys don’t always have bad teeth and a patch over their eyes. Those thieves and rogues who are the most cunning are the ones that appear to be incredibly safe. Keep yourself aware of your surroundings at all times.

Though on the whole Tortola is a completely safe place to be, you have to always understand that no place is totally safe. There has been an increase in petty crime on the island. What that means is if you’re not careful and if you’re not paying close attention, you could find yourself a victim of a crime --either robbed or even mugged if you stray too far from the group (especially at night).
