Tortola Surfing -- Continue

One of the most incredible aspects of Tortola is its draw for surfers. That’s right; this diminutive island of the BVI is just fantastic for anyone who loves to rip it and catch incredible waves. The water is clear, beautiful, and very rarely goes without an incredible swell. If you’re an experienced surfer and you like the thrill of chasing a wave (or a wave chasing you), then there are particular spots on Tortola where the elements collaborate to create waves that you wouldn’t even believe if you saw them up close.

If you’re looking for the perfect times in which surfing is ideal, then you’ll want to try your hand at the turquoise waves of Tortola between November and March --the perfect weather of winter leading into spring. The summer is usually no time to catch a wave, as the winter is when the low pressure systems push off the eastern seaboard of the United States and make their way into the winds of the Atlantic Ocean --thus creating incredibly ocean groundswell that meets the north facing shores of the Caribbean. Keep in mind there isn’t much of a swell because of Tortola’s positioning of facing northwest.

Beyond the window of opportunity you have to catch the surf, there’s a natural thrill that Tortola’s shoreline gives to anyone who wants to experience the majesty and high action ferocity of a Caribbean swell. Your best bet is to ignore any swell maps you find, as those are never guaranteed. You’ve got to take a chance and find a wave that catches your eye and is just waiting to be broken into. You’ll also have to deal with the fact that the renown of Tortola’s surfing potential is not a secret --though the island itself is a known as “nature’s little secret”, no one can keep surfers from trying to find the best wave. You’ll probably be surfing with other guests, but it’s the perfect opportunity to make some new friends and connections.

If you’re interested in finding a place where, when it does break, the surf is magical, then Tortola is your place. Though you’ll have to make room in your schedule and plan it perfectly, once you catch a wave in Tortola, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Get your surf board and your swimsuit and ride a wave that you’ll never ever experience anywhere else. You may just find that it’s the best surf you’ve taken in a while.
