Of course, you can’t go anywhere in St. Croix without being reminded of its illustrious history. If you’re interested in learning more about the beautiful St. Croix, take a trip to the Buck Island Reef National Monument. This historical landscape lay 1.5 miles of the northeast coast of St. Croix and is an impressive 880 acres: there are 176 acres of land completely surrounded by 704 acres of water and a coral reef system. Beyond the unbelievable view, this water locked piece of land is perfect for those who want to get in a round of snorkeling. If you’re truly adventurous, you should consider taking a dive through the deep, labyrinthine channels underneath the crystal blue waters.
It goes without saying that there are a great many historical monuments spotted throughout St. Croix. To get an up close and personal look at the history of St. Croix, visit one of the many historical cities. Fort Frederik, a fort built to protect the island from pirates, is the scene of most important event to take place in St. Croix --8000 slaves marched from Estate LaGrange to Fort Frederik demanding freedom. The governor of the time (1848), Governor Von Scholten, gave into their demands. Also take a peek at the Old Danish Customs House. As the name suggests, this is where sailors would come to port and pay their taxes as they sailed through St. Croix. Laying between Fort Christiansvaern and the Scale House, this incredible structure dates back to 1734 --when it was simply a single-story bookkeepers’ residence.
There’s something to do for everyone in St. Croix. You’d be hard pressed to fail to find something interesting to capture your attention. Whether you’re a thrill seeker, an adventurer, or a history buff, St. Croix has something for you to enjoy and take with you when all is said and done.
