The Reef at Duggan's Reef
(Teague Bay), St. Croix USVI
St. Croix is home to some of the most surprising beach experiences that you’ll ever find in the US Virgin Islands. You’ll be greeted with some beaches that are specifically geared towards a high season of tourists. On the other hand, you’ll find those beaches that have been unmarred by the prospect of consumerism. Further still, you have those islands that have the perfect blend of isolation and amenities to ensure that anyone who visits is as comfortable as possible. Teague Bay provides visitors with just that kind of experience.
This East End beach is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy the raw beauty of St. Croix but still feel close enough to the hustle and bustle of civilization to never feel as if there’s anything missing. The Reef and Teague Bay are somewhat of a mystery --another surprise of the St. Croix beaches. They are separate, but resoundingly hard to decipher. They blend into one another to become an amalgamation of beach beauty and world class sophistication. The beaches seem to be ordained for those who want it all --seclusion and civilization. They’re protected by a great barrier reef --hence its namesake.
The water of this beach --or these beaches-- is incredible and provides visitors with ample opportunities to get in a great deal of water sports (another surprise of the Caribbean, the water is calm enough to explore, yet strong enough to get rough and tumble with nature). On the one hand you’ll be able to do a great deal of snorkeling from this point in St. Croix. The water is relatively easy to enter and provides some magnificent views underwater if you’ve got the equipment to do so. On the other hand, the winds are strong enough at certain ends of the beach that you’ll be able to get in some windsurfing.
Of course, one thing that’s never surprising about the Caribbean is the class of the culinary delights therein. Teague Bay is no exception. You’ll not only be able to feast your eyes on the natural beauty of the Caribbean, you’ll also be able to sample the sumptuous delights for which the Caribbean is known. When you’ve had your fill of water sports and walking along the shoreline, you should make your way to Duggan’s Restaurant --located right on the beach-- and get your fill of the Caribbean fare offered.
In terms of amenities, the restaurant is your best bet; however, as another surprise of the Caribbean, this beach leaves you wanting for nothing. There are incredible areas in which you can find some shade away from the striking, albeit pleasant, rays of the Caribbean sun; there’s a bit of seaweed laying around, but there are patches of clear sand enough for you to laze about on the beach. It’s a very surprising experience, even for the Caribbean. This East End beach is perfect for those who are interested in experiencing something different in the US Virgin Islands.
