Sandy Point Beach, St. Croix USVI

There are those beaches that are simply there for you to enjoy the marvel that they actually are. Sometimes you can get carried away with wanting to engage in an unending list of activities that you actually forget to sit back and enjoy the unheard of nature that the Caribbean has to offer. You simply must drink it all in to believe it. With such a varied amount of beaches there are ample opportunities to experience this raw beauty in person, and in different levels. Truly one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll find in the US Virgin Islands (and indeed, the Caribbean) is the beach at Sandy Point.

First, let’s get the unfavorable news out of the way. There’s no shade on this stretch of land. Though not necessarily a downer, you’ll definitely have to wear sun protection so you don’t get stung by the beautiful rays of the sun --we all want to hold the sun in our hands sometimes; however, doing so without protection is a touch dangerous. Another bummer is that the beach is only open on the week-end and closed entirely between April and August to make way for the turtle nesting season. That being said, if and when you make it out to Sandy Point you’ll be greeted by one of the most gorgeous beaches you’ve ever seen --besides, you can still pick a spot away from the beach to observe the hatchlings as they poke out of their shells.

Sandy Point gets its namesake simply because it’s one of the longest stretches of sand in the entire Caribbean. The beach is so long and so full of beautiful white sand that one can’t help but be blown away by the sheer magnitude of the place. It’s a nice place to do a bit of swimming --though it would be advised that you only do so if you’re sure you can handle the severity with which the shore drops off as you get further out. However, the water is what makes this place one of the most beautiful --it’s clear, the waters are warm, and anyone wanting to get in touch with the rolling sea has the chance to do so. There are sand bars on which you can stand and let the waves spray you with their soft spume. As with the beach itself, the bottom of this part of the Caribbean is rather sandy. Unfortunately, there aren’t that many good opportunities to do any snorkeling.

If you’re interested in getting away from the crowds at the more popular beaches, this will be a perfect place for you. It’s not open all the time, so you’ll be able to take in some of the most beautiful nature and most assuredly be able to do so without interruption (people opting for a beach that offers more in the way of water sports). Even when there are crowds gathered at this beach, however, it’s so long that you’ll no doubt find a place to enjoy its splendor in relative privacy.
