The sea life is something to behold in St. Croix. While you’re taking your underwater excursion, be sure to bring along an underwater camera because some of the life under the sea will literally take your breath away. St. Croix’s north shore is famous for its beautiful seahorses. If you keep a safe distance, you’ll be able to even see one of the many pelagic sharks that are under the water. Keep watch for an eagle ray, as well. They lazily swim throughout the St. Croix waters and are as kind as can be.
If you’re an adventurer, then you’ll be able to embark on a scuba diving expedition all on your own merits. However, for those who are new to the scuba experience, there are plenty of chances for you to get a personal look at submarine St. Croix has to offer. There are a great many scuba diving facilities that include professional instructors and all the equipment you’ll need to get your underwater excursions underway. Throughout the island, there are those spots that provide some of the most remarkable scuba diving adventures in the Caribbean. You simply must find your way to Salt River Canyon, Cane Bay, and the Frederiksted Pier.
Salt River Canyon is a 1000 foot drop-off that culminates in a breathtaking waterfall. It’s perhaps one of the most popular scuba diving sites in the US Virgin Islands. There are a plethora of animals existing under the waves of the Salt River Canyon, including hawksbill turtles, moray, and electric eels. Cane Bay is just as impressive, with a wall that juts out 40 to 60 feet over a 600 foot drop-off. This scuba diving site, spread across five miles of the northwest coast of St. Croix, is not only home to a great deal of wildlife, but also to a host of Danish anchors. Frederiksted Pier is a marvel in and of itself. This 250 yard concrete pier rests in the middle of hundreds of schools of fish, sea sponges, and seahorses. There are a few shallow wrecks northwest of Frederiksted: The Barge, The Suffolk Maid, and The Rosamaria. Don’t miss out on your chance to explore the incredible underwater life of St. Croix.
