St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

While St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, its largest community is not the capital. (Charlotte Amalie, on St. Thomas, serves as the capital). More than 50,000 people live on St. Croix, with population widely scattered around the island. The two largest towns have names that indicate the strong European/Danish influence in island history - Frederiksted and Christiansted.

St. Croix is also home to a number of parks, including Salt River, Buck Island and the historic architecture of Christiansted. Ocean-oriented parks offer great sea-life experiences. In fact, this island is quite well known for its wonderful scuba diving action. Buck Island features white sand beach, great snorkeling opportunities and some of the most beautiful ocean scenery anywhere. Salt River Bay is a national historical park and ecological preserve. A site is marked where Christopher Columbus landed during the 1493 voyage. Ask an experienced Caribbean diver about "the Wall." If activity on the water's surface is more your style, the island certainly offers fishing, relaxed boating and even kayak trips.

St. Croix Vacation Guide -- Continue

Unlike the less-populated island of St. John, visitors can fly to St. Croix. Those who stay on St. Thomas can travel to this and other islands on the daily ferry. This island has the only casino in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and also offers outdoor music concerts, horse racing and golf. Those who are interested in knowing more about the history and culture of this region may want to visit one of the dozens of sugar-mill ruins around St. Croix or see the restored Whim sugar plantation.

Accommodations are certainly no problem on St. Croix with resorts and hotels available. Visitors who find the island irresistible may choose to stay. Real estate professionals can help you find a small home, a more luxurious residence, a condominium or even some open land that is perfect for a new home.

Of course, night life is one of the most popular pastimes no matter which of the U.S. Virgin Islands you're on. St. Croix has an excellent selection of restaurants ranging from informal/casual to the more formal dinner with several courses. Yet, the relaxed atmosphere also provides plenty of chances to just sit back, enjoy a cocktail and listen to one of the small bands that perform in the local venues. Then again, if you want to hear something more "refined" you may want to see a live musical performance or play at the Performing Arts Center.

On St. Croix, variety is truly the spice of life!
