Denis Bay Beach, St. John USVI

There are few opportunities to enjoy the serenity of the US Virgin Islands. However, if you find yourself in St. John one of the best chances you’ll get to experience seclusion and complete calm away from the tourist epicentres of the Caribbean is Denis Bay. It’s perfect if you just want a calm location to lay your beach blanket down and let the warm air of the Caribbean Sea waft over you.

If you’re up for an adventure and don’t mind working for your privacy, then Denis Bay is just perfect for you. It takes a bit to get to the secluded beach --as the only way to get there is via sea or from a rugged trail through the forest-- but once there you’ll be invited by the warm sea breeze and the gorgeous turquoise waters. You’ll be taking a chance walking the trail to get there --a path from the Peace Hill Trail that descends to the beach itself. Your best bet is to come to the beach by boat --you’ll enjoy the scenic route much more, anyway.

Denis Bay has been brought in as a part of the Virgin Islands National Park, but it still has the same charm as it always has. There is great vegetation and the water is as pristine as ever. There are some incredible opportunities to get in a bit of snorkeling if you so choose. The water is relatively calm and marvelously clear. There are many reefs that envelope the bay, especially around the small little islet just offshore from Denis Pay --Perkins Cay. You’ll be able to see the coral encrusted fluke of an ancient anchor left there from ages ago. You’ll also be able to experience the remarkable coral that inhabits the US Virgin Islands.

There aren’t many facilities --if any-- to speak of. However, this bay is specific to those who would rather just spend the day relaxing on the beach with at book or a picnic basket. There’s no need to be bothered with the heavy tourist spots of Cruz Bay or even the slightly more rugged Chocolate Hole. Denis Bay gives those visitors who want it the opportunity to explore, gaze, and daydream to their hearts’ content.

There’s plenty of beach for anyone wanting to get in a good bit of mediation and relaxation; however, beyond the first views of vegetation there is private property. Of course, one should always be respectful of others’ private property; however, it shouldn’t be a problem as the beach is expansive enough for anyone who wants to take it in. As the trail leading to the beach is rugged and unmaintained, there won’t be much opportunity for you to feel as though you’re being crowded. Not many people want to go through the hassle of getting to this little alcove in the Caribbean, so you’ll be able to spend all your time exploring from the shoreline to the first signs of vegetation in relative quiet and calm.
