Haulover Beach South, St. John USVI

There are a couple places on St. John where you can take time out to simply enjoy the natural beauty that the island has to offer. Haulover Bay is one of those places. As opposed to its counterpart, Haulover South gives you the quiet serenity of the calming ocean breeze and provides you with plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports without worrying about intense winds carrying you away. Of course, if you like the prospect of drifting along on the calm waters, Haulover South is also the perfect place to enjoy the serenity of the Caribbean Sea.

Haulover Bay South has had its brush with fame in the best way possible. Hollywood took it upon itself to introduce the world at large to the small fringe of land in St. John. If you’ve seen the movie Big Blue, then you’ve had the opportunity to see Haulover South. This stretch of coral rubble beach is much calmer than its northern counterpart; however, that’s where the differences end. The water is still clear, the beach is still relatively unpopulated, and there’s even more of an opportunity to do some incredible snorkeling --giving you the chance to see some of the prominent underwater wildlife that inhabits St. John in particular and the US Virgin Islands in general.

If you want to find a nice place to set up a picnic, there’s nowhere better than before the calm, clear Caribbean waters. Haulover South is pristine and peaceful, giving any visitor with a penchant for privacy the opportunity to get his fill of the beach without the worry of tourists or a great deal of locals, even. The snorkeling is grand on this tiny beach. Entry is much easier and is just perfect for those who are just learning how to snorkel or those who enjoy snorkeling on a regular basis. Along the western shore toward the point of Haulover South, you’ll come across some blinders (or offshore rocks). Sea cucumbers make their habitat along the blinders. You’ll also get the chance to see soft starfish, red sea urchins, and bristle worms under the rocks of the shallower areas of the shore.

Beyond just the incredible snorkeling, Haulover South is perfect for getting a great view of the natural, raw beauty of the Caribbean. As there isn’t much in the way of amenities it would be a good idea to bring your own equipment and perhaps even some provisions for the day. It’s a lovely beach to veg out and enjoy the calm, sea breeze as it wafts along the beach. The sunset is just magnificent bouncing off the clear, turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

If you’re interested in getting away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city streets in Cruz Bay, you may want to take a nice jaunty stroll to Haulover South. It’s quiet, picturesque, and provides the perfect excuse for you to just laze about in the beautiful sun and cool breeze that bounces off the water.
