Maho Bay Beach, St. John USVI
Sometimes the fast pace of the more popular and frequented beaches of St. John can be a bit intimidating. There are moments during the Caribbean Carousel that is the US Virgin Islands where you just want to have a nice, relaxing day at the beach without having to worry about moving along to make room for many tourists or without having to worry if there’s plenty of beach activity for the whole family. If you’re looking for something that’s both convenient and great for children, Maho Bay is just the location for you.
Maho Bay boasts one of the most easily accessible beaches on St. John. It’s the only north shore beach wherein you can drive right up to the beach. With its laid back atmosphere and its beautiful landscape, it’s no wonder that so many people take the opportunity to photograph this gorgeous beach whenever possible. There are no parking lots, no encrypted signs. There’s just the road and the beach --so if you’re not too worried about parking your car right next to the beach without any designated signs or spaces, then you’re ready to enjoy the gorgeous locale and the convenience of Maho Bay.
Once you park your car near one of the Maho trees that line the beach, you’re ready to take your family on an incredible beach adventure. There is a National Park pavilion at the far western end of the beach (though you need a permit to use the facility) and a trail that you may walk to get a first person point of view of the natural beauty of the beach. Goat Trail leads straight to the Maho Bay Campground that’s located on Maho Bay --so if you’re interested in camping under the Caribbean breeze and ethereal stars, then Maho Bay is just where you need to be to make that reality.
The waters are calm, shallow, and perfect for the entire family. If you’re looking to do a bit of snorkeling, you’re in great luck. The snorkeling on Maho Bay is perfect for anyone --whether you’re just learning or you’re an expert. The sea bottom is compiled of soft sand and sea grass; hidden among the grass you’ll find conch and magnificent sea turtles. If you’re more interested in staying closer to shore, you’ve nothing to worry about. The reef lining the shore provides a great deal of entertainment for those who want to keep themselves close enough to the beach. You’ll have nothing but fun while you explore the natural wonders of the Caribbean from the coast of Maho Bay Beach.
More than just the underwater wildlife, Maho Bay has its own spectacular flora for people to take in. The bay was named after the beautiful Hibiscus trees (the Maho trees) that line the shore. There is a particular plant that is prevalent on the beach. It’s heart shaped and produces a yellow flower that eventually turns purple. So if you’re interested in taking in the unparalleled beauty of St. John, you must take a trip to Maho Bay.
