Monte Bay Beach, St. John USVI

The US Virgin Islands is a place with an incredible buzz and a great sense of community. It boasts some of the most amazing shopping opportunities and opens its shores to thousands of tourists all year round. Sometimes, however, you just want to find a place to lie out and enjoy the scenery. Sometimes you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main port of call that is Cruz Bay. If you find yourself needing to get away and just enjoy the cool Caribbean breeze as it dances off the waters, you’ll need to find yourself at Monte Bay.

This cobblestone and coral rubble beach isn’t exactly a popular spot for most people visiting the US Virgin Islands. In fact, very few people make their way to the beach on a regular basis. Very rarely you’ll see a local resident fishing or just lounging about on the beach on their towel; however, for the most part it’s a most uninhabited, unpopulated area. This is mainly because there isn’t much in the way of opportunities for snorkeling or swimming. There’s a mighty breeze that rolls onshore and causes the waters to be quite unstable --bordering on treacherous. There are waves that even break over some patches of reef. What’s more of an impetus for tourists to stay away is the great amount of sea urchins that inhabit the waters.

However, for many snorkeling is just another way to avoid taking in the natural beauty of the islands. There aren’t many people that come to these beaches because they want to experience everything the brochures say you should when you visit the US Virgin Islands; however, if you just want to enjoy the peace of the beach itself, then you’ll adore Monte Bay. Though the breeze makes for choppy waters, it is actually rather cooling and soothing to the wayward beachcomber.

What’s more incredible about Monte Bay is all that you can take away from it. It’s the perfect place for people who love to collect seashells. You can walk along the beach and any junction find incredible pieces of coral or lovely seashells to take back to the mainland with you. As you won’t be able to find much in the way of amenities, it would be to your advantage to bring your own provisions --and what a great location to have your own plans for entertainment!

Monte Bay is a great location for those who would rather get away from the commercial tourism of the main beaches. If you want to find a place to just set up camp (or a picnic, or a private moment with a loved one), Monte Bay is absolutely perfect. It’s secluded, very seldom populated, and provides a breeze that tickles your skin as you lie on your beach towel across the coral rubble beach. The water is fine, but choppy and doesn’t make for anything beyond a great place to watch the sun set as you finish your perfectly secluded holiday on the beach.
