Bluebeard's Beach, St. Thomas USVI

St. Thomas Bluebeards Beach

Vessup Bay is beautiful for those who simply want to take a stroll or maybe set up a quiet picnic. If you truly want to break out and have a bit of fun, you’ll travel a little ways beyond Vessup to Bluebeard’s Beach. This piece of land is perfect for those who are into incredible water sports. It’s also not too shabby a place to explore.

Surprisingly under populated, Bluebeard’s Beach is certainly a perfect place to get your share of serenity and play. The sand is impeccable and makes for incredible walks along the shoreline. There are a great many shaded areas in which you can take your favorite book and recline for the whole day with the breeze from the Caribbean wafting against your skin. The backdrop, as with most of Vessup Bay, is a beautiful formation of rocks and crags --watching the waves lap up against the rocks is a treat in and of itself.

If you want to take in some of the underwater sights you’re absolutely in luck. The snorkeling at Bluebeard’s Beach is out of this world. The reef is gorgeous, the fish are plentiful, and there’s enough calm water on the left shoreline that you won’t have to worry much about the waves knocking you about. It’s relatively safe among the waves on Bluebeard’s, but as always practice practicality when deciding where to explore the natural wonder of the Caribbean Sea.

Of course, Bluebeard’s Beach isn’t only for those who like to play hard --or conversely, those who like to take it easy. There is plenty of historical relevance to lap up on this beach. The ruins of Bluebeard’s Castle have been made into a resort; however, the facade still has the same mystique as the ruins before commerce took hold. The legend goes that the famous Captain Bluebeard crafted this lookout tower on the hilltop overlooking Charlotte Amalie in order to see incoming ships.

Don’t be alarmed if you find the comfort of seclusion a bit too much at times. There are definitely fully functional facilities around if you’re in need of something to get you through the day. There are places where you can get equipment if you’re so inclined to do a bit of snorkeling or swimming --though, divers might find the spot a bit disappointing as the water, though calm, isn’t quite conducive for those who like to take monster flips from the rocks.

This beach is easily accessible by foot or by taxi. If you’re looking for a place to stay, you’ve nothing to worry about. Along with Bluebeard’s Castle (now a resort), you’ve got the option of trekking a small way to the Ritz Carlton Resort to rest your bones after a full day of water sports and site seeing. There’s nothing that can match the Caribbean for impressive beaches and calm waters. If you’re looking for the perfect combination of seclusion and commercial access, Bluebeard’s Beach is just the spot for you.
