Dorothea Bay Beach, St. Thomas USVI

St. Thomas Dorothea Bay

If you’re looking for a good bit of reflection in the US Virgin Islands, then you’re in quite a good bit of luck. Dorothea Bay is not your typical island beach. This isn’t the type of spot you go to get a bit of sport in; rather it’s a place where you can meditate, reflect, and become one with your own psyche.

Dorothea Bay is located on St. Thomas. It’s quite the paradise in terms of its richness, its natural beauty. Its isolated nature makes it the perfect spot for calm meditation and reflection. There aren’t an incredible amount of people that visit this beach paradise, for it’s not particularly known for its patronage to the tourists in a typical sense. For instance, there are very few amenities, if at all. If you’re looking for a spot to hang out with friends or to explore, you’ll need to be sure that you pack a picnic basket as well as anything else you feel you may need while exploring this little piece of Caribbean serenity.

St. Thomas Dorothea Bay

This beach is as beautiful as its waters are dangerous. This is certainly not the place to do any diving or snorkeling; the waters tend to be rather choppy and not amenable to taking long, luxurious dips. There is a rather strong breeze that adds to the intense current of the waters. There’s a great deal of rock to sift through if you’re one to go on small adventures. If you’re interested in visiting this beach, you’ll most certainly need to rent your own transportation or arrange for a taxi to get you there and bring you back.

As was mentioned, this isn’t the typical beach fare that one would be used to on the mainland or closer to the more populated island of the Caribbean. If you’re searching for inspiration, you’ll truly enjoy the sparse nature of Dorothea Bay. However, be prepared to be cast into the wilderness. There are a few condos sprinkled along the shore. Other than a few local residents, there’s no one to interrupt your reflection; however, there’s also nothing in the way of luxuries you’ll find on the main land to keep you occupied. This is truly the type of place for someone who wants to get spiritually closer with nature and not be bothered with the fuss of everyday life.

As this is such an isolated an unpopulated area, there are no restaurants or hotels to speak of on the island itself. If you’re absolutely hard pressed to get out to Dorothea Bay, make sure that you’ve booked a reservation at a hotel closer to civilization. Also, be sure that you’re not going out there hungry or without any provisions for yourself. You’ll be in a rut of you’ve stepped onto the mostly pebbly beach thinking this was the same as one of the many tourist beaches around St. Thomas.

Dorothea Bay is a lovely place for those who want time to reflect and get away from the hustle and bustle of the more tourist friendly areas in St. Thomas.
